A Different Samuel L. Jackson

Nothing says "Merry Christmas" like a new movie from Quentin Tarantino.  His western, THE HATEFUL EIGHT, doesn't open until Christmas Day.  But a trailer for it hit social media a few days ago and had Tarantino fanboys and fangals squealing with glee.  The director/screenwriter put Samuel L. Jackson in another bad-ass role.  And nobody can play bad-ass like Samuel L. Jackson.

The time is about ten years after the Civil War has come to an end.
Here's the trailer and, yes, that's Kurt Russell with Jackson.

About five years ago, Samuel L. Jackson had a dramatic role that was a departure from what we've come to expect of a Samuel L. Jackson character.  Mother and Child takes us to sunny modern-day Los Angeles.  Annette Bening starred in this film, out the same year as her performance in The Kids Are All Right.  Jackson played a dapper, urbane, financially successful professional in Mother and Child.  He's excellent.
If you're a Jackson fan, you should see it so you  can appreciate his range as an actor.  Listen to this short podcast piece I did on Mother and Child after Bening got an Oscar nomination for 2010's The Kids Are All Right.

Since it's release, you know that Mother and Child co-star Kerry Washington has become a big star on ABC's Scandal.  She and Samuel L. Jackson shared movie screen time in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained (2012).  Here's a trailer for Mother and Child.

Mother and Child really moved me and it's full of rich performances.  Keep it in mind if you're up for some mature entertainment.  And you'll see a different Samuel L. Jackson.
